USING PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPHY TO EXAMINE THE GONIAL ANGLE IN BATAKNESE BASED ON GENDER AND DENTAL CONDITION

Abstract

Using a technique called panoramic radiography, images of the mandible, maxilla, and supporting facial tissues are captured. Since panoramic radiography provides a thorough image of the teeth and surrounding structures, including the mandibular gonial angle area, it is a commonly utilized imaging tool in dental offices. This study aims to analyze variations in gonial angles between dentate and partially edentulous Bataknese subjects and assess gender-based differences. An observational-analytical research was conducted from June 2022 to July 2023 at the Dental Radiology Installation of the Dental and Oral Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara, and Clinic Laboratory Pramita Medan. Sixty panoramic radiographs of people who were dentate (control group) and sixty panoramic radiographs of those who were slightly edentulous were the primary data collected from 120 Bataknese respondents through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using independent T-tests with a significance level of p < 0.05, and descriptive statistics were utilized. In somewhat edentulous men, the mean gonial angle was 119.942°, while in women it was 123.367°. Men's mean gonial angle in the dentate group was 117.497°, while women's was 121.335°. When Bataknese men and women experience partial tooth loss, their gonial angle is larger than that of those with full dentures. Compared to Bataknese men, women have a greater gonial angle.
